The red-crested cardinal (Paroaria coronata) is a bird that lives in pairs and in
small flocks in the south and southeast of Brazil, as well as in Bolivia, Paraguay,
Uruguay, and Argentina. Because it is a bird with striking plumage and singing, it
is the target of hunters, who lock them in cages or sell them through the illegal
bird trade, which is a crime in Brazil.
Abroad, the species was introduced in Hawaii, first on the Hawaiian island of Oahu
